The Mobo Awards 2011 were once again held in Glasgow. It was the second time the city had held the prestigious award and the event proved to be another fascinating show-stopper.
The award ceremony has been going on for 16 years and has helped champion the amazing rise of urban music over the past decade - from being only recognised as belonging to a niche market, to leading the UK charts.
The 2011 Mobo Awards took place at Glasgow’s SECC, with US star Jason Derulo and singer Alesha Dixon hosting the event. Jessie J came out just ahead of artists such as Adele and Tinie Tempah who were shortlisted for four awards. Wretch on the other hand was the most nominated male act of the year and had to fight it out with Tinie Tempah, Wiley and Rizzle Kicks. Wretch’s debut single Traktor, reached number five in the UK single charts and was nominated for best song. In the end though none of these tried and tested artists (except for Wretch perhaps) won the awards. N-Dubz won the best UK act. JLS picked up the best Newcomer and best song.
If you would like to be at the next one which looks like it might be held in Scotland again, Hotel breaks Scotland, will be able to help you with accommodation.
Launched in 1992 by the founder and CEO Kanya King MBE, MOBO Awards, has without a doubt played an instrumental role in promoting black music and culture into mainstream popular status in the UK. The award continues to lure one of the largest prime time multicultural audiences in Europe, thanks partly to some of the mesmerising performances from the cream of UK and International talents. Janet Jackson, P,Diddy, Mark Ronson, Dionne Warwick, Jay-Z, LL Cool, J Amy Winehouse and John Legend are just some of the show-stoppers that have performed at the event.
Dunkeld hotel is another place worth staying in Scotland. Who knows, you may end up rubbing shoulders with new celebrities. Artists such as Ms Dynamite, Chipmunk, Craig David can trace the start of their success to the MOBO awards. Every one of them won Best Newcomer awards and went on to achieve great success.
