Great Scottish Exports

When it comes to great Scottish exports, the first thing that comes to most people’s mind is Scottish whisky and rightly so. Scottish whisky is drunk in every corner of the earth. From Africa to the furthest tips of the Northern Hemisphere, the drink is known and associated with Scotland.

There are however other great exports from Scotland. Some might say North Sea oil is arguably Scotland’s most important export, but there are less controversial goods which Scotland exports to other parts of the world – shortbread, for instance.

Walkers Shortbread is Scottish. They manufacture shortbread biscuits, crackers and cookies and are Scotland’s biggest export of food. The company’s signature is the pure butter shortbread which is baked in the village of Moray in Aberlour, Speyside. The recipe is derived from an original family recipe perfected by Joseph Walker in 1898. The company, which is still family owned, is known worldwide and you will see their products in most major airport destinations around the world.

The company has so far received the Queen’s Award for Export achievements three times. It is the highest accolade that can be given to British exporters.

Many of Scotland’s other food producer are following in the Walker’s tradition with the country reaching a record food export figures of one billion pounds. Much of the food Scotland produces is finding its way into Germany where the import of Scottish food products is up by 27%. Fish and shellfish, diary and eggs are the two biggest areas of growth in the Scottish food export market. Scottish sale of Scotch beef and lamb is also on the rise.

Before taking any short breaks Scotland holidays it is worth going on a diet to prepare your body or the endless sampling of food you may not be able to resist. All the Hotel breaks Scotland will offer good Scottish, but there are plenty of eateries in all the major cities worth trying out.
