Golf World Records

Amongst the records for peas stuffed up one’s nostrils and hotdogs eaten in minutes, it’s easy to forget the more impressive, not to mention weirder, records held in the more mundane disciplines. Golf actually has a whole wealth of bizarre records, some so extreme that they will probably still be held for many years to come.

Hole in one

The hole in one, the holy grail of golf is coveted by many but only achieved by few. What about if we up the stakes and take a look at the longest hole in one? A sniper golf shot, if you like. Well, this record has been solidly held since the swinging summer of ‘65, by Robert Mitera at the aptly-named Miracle Hills Golf Club in Omaha. Mitera took a swing from over 400 yards and landed a hole in one from that unthinkable distance. The funniest thing about the whole instance is that it wasn’t intended to have been a world record attempt, but was just plain, dumb luck. Maybe next time you head out on one of the great many golf hotel deals you’ll attempt to beat this record, but you’ll probably have more luck if you don’t think about it at all. Damn, now you can’t help it . . .

Age

The youngest player to score a hole in one was Jake Paine, who managed the unthinkable feat from 65 yards at the age of three. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I could have even held a golf club at the age of three, let alone swing it and score a feat that most adults can only dream of. As for the oldest, the centenarion Harold Stilson of Florida managed the feat from 108 yards back in 2001. If this doesn’t set fire to your golfing heels, then I don’t know what will. Get out there and outplay these two if you dare! I bet the UK Golf hotels are full of players who can only dream of this.
