One of the most popular events celebrated in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, is the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It attracts a vast number of spectators each year, and Edinburgh caters for many tastes – so, whether you’re looking for a cheap self-catering apartment for the weekend, or even a luxury hotel Edinburgh can offer an experience tailored to meet both your tastes and your budget.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is actually a series of Military tattoos, colourful air shows performed by the British Armed Forces; as well as a selection of Commonwealth and International military groups and display teams. The event takes place in August, at which time Edinburgh really is a hive of activity. Elsewhere in the city, you’ll be able to visit the Edinburgh Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe events and even the Edinburgh Annual Book Festival!
The term ‘tattoo’ bears no relation to the art of inking skin; rather, it comes from the Dutch phrase ‘tap toe’, meaning ‘last orders’. The British Army first encountered the phrase while stationed in Flanders for the War of the Austrian Succession, and it became used as a signal within military barracks, indicating the hour in the evening at which recruits ought to stop drinking, and get to bed!
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo was first performed in 1950, to a total of 6000 spectators seated on benches around the castle… nowadays it has grown to a massive celebration, which averages at around 217,000 spectators each year.
One of the most popular spots from which to watch the tattoo, is up by the majestic Edinburgh Castle. You’ll have no problem finding a good Edinburgh Castle hotel, which will put you close to all the action. From here, you’ll be able to enjoy magnificent panoramic views over the city below, while up above the talented airmen split the sky apart in a kaleidoscope of coloured smoke.
Scotland has been in my bucket list for a long time. I wish I could visit one day :)
