The Skyline of Vienna

Vienna is one of the greatest old cities in Europe. It is hard to define which of the many magnificent buildings is the true symbol of the Austrian capital – all these architectural wonders combine together in an unique ensemble of styles and shapes.

One of the specific features in Vienna's skyline is the absence of tall buildings compared to the other European capitals. The number of high-rise buildings is kept low by building legislation aimed at preserving green areas and districts designated as world cultural heritage. Strong rules apply to the planning, authorisation and construction of high-rise buildings, including the hotels Vienna has. Consequently, much of the inner city is a high-rise free zone.

The relatively low profile of Vienna doesn't affect its reputation of a city with impressive skyline. Here are some of the most spectacular palaces in the world – the Baroque residences Schonbrunn and Belvedere along with their surrounding parks which are not less impressive than the buldings they're encompassing.

The palaces are not the only distinctive buildings in Vienna. One such example is the Albertina, with its unique shape, not to mention the drawings and the old masters prints inside. Vienna also houses many Gothic buildings like the imposing cathedral Stephansdom. Neoclassicism is also well presented with the Parliament building and the statue of Athena in front. The picture will not be complete without the Secession building and its golden dome and the Riesenrad in the Viennese Prater.

Modern Vienna is completely different from the old city. Donaustadt is a whole district dedicated as a place where many international organisations have their offices and seats. Such is also the UN complex with the Austria Center Vienna.
